Chapter Eleven
Day 4
Despite the peaceful end of the night, my sleep was plagued with nightmares once again. I kept reliving the worst moment of my life. Holding Roger as he bled out before my eyes, the cop at my door to inform me that Helen had died, the morning that I woke up to my dead son in my arms. These seemed to play over and over on a loop, only with equally horrifying visions flashing in between the loops. These visions all involved Katie. In one, I saw myself carrying her dead body to the lake. In another, I turned her over, only to see a massive wound on the back of her head. It looked as if her skull had caved in, bits of bone were visible on the outside edges of the wound. There were more, but the only other visual I recall from this dream is her dead body laying by the fire with me on top of her, making love to her dead body.
The nightmare ended with me looking down at my son, his body decayed more than it actually was that horrible morning. I woke with a scream at this moment, only to find myself staring directly at the wound on the back of Katieâs head. The same wound from the dream. I screamed again and stood up, taking a few steps back.
I have to still be dreaming.
I ran to the water and jumped in, not caring that I was fully clothed. The coolness of the lake made my skin feel alive and made my heart race faster.
Convinced that I had to be awake, I approached Katie once more. The wound was still there, just as it had been in my dream. A few maggots crawled around the damaged tissue.
With dripping hands, I rolled Katie to her back. She wasnât breathing, wasnât moving. Her skin wasnât the right color or temperature.
Had she died overnight?
I knew that wasnât the reality. The knowledge that the visions in my dream were actually snippets of reality hit like a freight train. Sheâd been dead since before I found her. Sheâd died in the crash. I somehow believed this dead woman was alive and made her my companion. I hoped that the times we made love were part of that fantasy as well, but I knew better. I knew deep down what I had done.
I took off running into the woods. I ran for⦠Iâm not sure how long. Iâm not sure of anything anymore. Itâs like I was missing time, because I remember taking off running into the woods, but the next thing I remember after that was sitting against a tree, sobbing. I sat there for quite some time, going in and out of consciousness. I was losing it for sure.
At one point, I noticed it was beginning to get dark. I decided to start walking again. Unsure of which direction I had come from, I picked a path and hoped it would lead me back to the lake.
